Desiderata Poem ( Plus Video)

We hope that this Desiderata poem by Max Ehrmann plus video can uplift you in these unprecedented times. These are such important words for life. We live in modern and changing times, which now appear to be very uncertain.  Just listen to the news, on your phone, tablet, and TV, and rarely, it’s from a positive perspective.

In our own lives, we all have bad days and times to cope with. In most cases,  you can recover and come out the other side, a stronger and a better individual.  My dogs have been such a help through these times.

Desiderata Poem - Video For Unprecedented Times

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall………….. Confucius

My favorite poem is a well-known poem called Desiderata by Max Ehrmann. The Latin meaning literally means – ” something that is needed or wanted.”

I just find it so inspirational and uplifting and I do hope that you do also. Therefore, if you are feeling low and insecure and need something uplifting, then just listen to the video and read these fantastic words for life.

Lessons For Life:

Desiderata Video

The words should remind you to try to be kind to people, but be yourself, because most of us are finding the hard battle called life. – “As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.”

Also don’t give in to bullies or aggressive people, because all people have their own story to tell. –  “even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit.”

Above all, don’t compare yourself to other people and put yourself down, as most of us do. We are all unique. – “If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.”

It’s been said that the biggest reason for a bad day, is that people get up and go on social media and compare their lives to their friends, instead of focusing on their own and getting it sorted out.

The poem reminds you to be gentle with yourself, again we all keep putting ourselves down – ” Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.”

It keeps reminding you that this world is still beautiful, with kind and forgiving folks and dogs in it – “With all it’s sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy”

Please enjoy the words and the video.

Desiderata Video and Poem:

Desiderata Poem:

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all, its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

  1. This is a beautiful poem, which carries within it many lessons to take with us in life. Although we don’t currently have a dog at present when we used to have them they would often sense when I was going through a rough time and come to comfort me. Thanks for sharing.

  2. There’s something about poems that I just don’t understand. It’s a type of art that is really unfamiliar to me, probably because I never read any. When you get into poems like this, it’s almost like reading Shakespeare. You know it’s something beautiful, yet its in some long lost language you can’t understand. There’s something about that thought that makes me want to read more poems

      What a beautiful and thoughtful post. I never thought of the poem, the way that you expressed.

      Kind regards

  3. wow. Thanks for sharing such a powerful piece of poetry. It came at the right time as I have been in my head lately and this poem is a reminder that life is indeed a marathon and not  sprint.

    It cautions and yet tells us we can be so much more and help make the world a better place not just by loving our pets but loving and respecting one another as we all have a story.

    • I am so glad that you found the content of help.  I love your post especially the part – ……..help make the world a better place not just by loving our pets but loving and respecting one another as we all have a story.” Thank you.

  5. Such a beautiful poem.. I think the advice in this poem is more of the way dogs live their lives in my opinion. In terms of good living, principles and forgiveness, dogs are far more in the doing than we very unpredictable and sometimes irrational humans.

    We should learn from dogs. They are loyal and submissive down to the point of death. A dog does not keep malice against the owner, it forgives before it is even offended. Beautiful poem for us all

      Glad you enjoyed the poem. Totally agree with you about our dogs, ” A dog does not keep malice against the owner, it forgives …..”

      As one who helps with rescue dogs, I am always amazed at their loving nature, especially the conditions that they sometimes come from. I doubt we as humans, would be as forgiving.

  6. When I learned to be gentle with myself, I learned to love myself as much as I love others.  I’ve always enjoyed this poem as well.  Truly, the importance of listening to others and communicating our truth reverently and clearly is nourishment for all the souls we touch.

    Thank you for sharing your video rendition.  It was the first thing I saw after my own daily meditations.

    The end of this poem reflects my own thoughts almost daily, that this is a terrible and beautiful world we dwell in.  I shall always endeavor to give thanks for all the beauty amidst the tragedy.
