A Dogs Prayer – One Of The Most Beautiful Poems I Have Read

I am always on the lookout for poems and content relating to dogs. One of the beautiful poems I have come across is called the Dogs Prayer by Beth Norman Harris.

I truly hope that you enjoy it:

Dog’s Prayer:

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world, is more grateful for kindness than mine.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for although I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will teach me more quickly the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when I hear your step.

When the weather is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer used to the bitter elements, and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I would not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.

Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding. To walk by your side, standing ready to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And master, when I am very old, if the greatest master sees fit to deprive me of my health and sight, do not turn me away. Rather see that my trusting life is taken gently and I shall leave you knowing with the last breath I draw, my life was always safe in your hand.

  1. Wow, such a great poem. Having had both a dog and a cat, i know dogs are the most appreciative of every gesture and one should reciprocate the same love they receive. Make them comfortable even when they look like they don’t mind the hardship they face especially being outside in the cold.

Thanks you for your kind thoughts and I totally agree with your comment “..and one should reciprocate the same love they receive”

  2. Its a really beautiful poem, and its something that I would definitely read on more than one occasion.

I love dogs, and to be honest with you, I would choose them over some human relationship that I currently have. I know, that I might sound crazy.

Truth be told, these creatures have amazing compassion and loyalty, and though they can’t speak, their actions say so much.

Thanks for the awesome post, and I have bookmarked your site. It’s nice to hear stories of another dog lover such as yourself.

    All the best

  3. This is great. Dogs are such awesome animals and so rewarding to have as pets. They aren’t always treated kindly here on Koh Lanta (in Thailand), which is really sad. The local Muslims generally don’t like dogs. Thankfully though, we have a great animal centre on Koh Lanta that looks after stray and abandoned dogs, and finds ‘forever’ homes for a lot of them through their adoption program. Tourists can also visit the animal centre and take the dogs out for walks, and it’s actually turned out to be one of the most popular tourist activities on Koh Lanta and is rated really high on Tripadvisor! It just shows how many people out there love dogs, and for good reason.

    • Thank you for such a great post. I found it so interesting and informative, showing another country and culture. As you say, thank goodness for the animal centre on Koh Lanta and how it impacts positively on the tourist activities for the region .
