Dog Lover:

She is an avid dog lover and adopted a greyhound called Sapphire from a small rescue center in Scotland. Great company for her current dog, a Jack Russell Terrier called Butch.

Joanne Rowling is popularly known as J.K. Rowling the author of the incredibly popular Harry Potter book series was born in Chipping Sodbury near Bristol, England on July 31, 1965.

She was born to Peter J Rowling and Anne Volant, and the couple had two children, called Joanne and Diane.

Peter worked for the British Navy and Anne for the Women’s Royal Navy Service. During her childhood, she lived in Winterbourne in England and later moved to Tutshill, when she was nine.

There she went to the Wyedean School but wasn’t great at studies or sports.

J. K. Rowling’s Early Life:

She took her grandmother’s initials, Kathleen, as her middle name, thereby adopting the pen name J.K. Rowling. When Rowling was just 15, a huge blow came, in the form of her mother’s illness.

Unfortunately, she gave in to the disease in 1990. Her mother had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease.

She then graduated from Exeter University, where she majored in French. In between jobs, she even worked for Amnesty International for a year.

After her mother’s death, she left for Portugal to teach English, where she met a Portuguese-television journalist, Jorge Arantes. They married in 1992, but the duo enjoyed marital bliss only for eleven months.

After a bitter divorce, Rowling returned to England in 1993 with her daughter Jessica. She stayed close to her sister Diane.

How Success Came About:

The idea of the best seller Harry Potter, actually came about, while she was traveling on a train to London from Manchester in the year 1990.

She did not even have a pen to write her thoughts down and hence she let the story weave in her mind for a while.

She struggled to maintain her child with the meager welfare amount that she received. Though starved for money, Rowling did not take up a full-time job and decided to finish her book.

Her Big Break:

She sent the final copy to a number of literary agents. The manuscript Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s-Stone was rejected by popular publishing houses Penguin, Transworld, and Harper Collins.

Finally, Bloomsbury Children’s Books gave her a cheque for $14,300 and claimed the rights to her first manuscript. The book was published on June 30, 1997, and became a rage.

Later that year, the American Rights of the book were sold to Scholastic Books for a whopping $105,000.

The book was released in the United States in the year 1998, but the title was changed to “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”

Harry Potter Books:

In June 1999, “Harry Potter and the Chamber-of-Secrets” was released. Next came the 3rd book called “Harry Potter and the Prisoner-of-Azkaban”.

The 4th book in the series was called “Harry Potter and the Goblet-of-Fire. It was released in 2000 and sold 1.5 million copies in the United Kingdom and 3.8 million in the United States.

In June 2003, the 5th book “Harry Potter and the Order-of-the-Phoenix” was published.

The 6th book of the entire series, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” was launched in July 2007 and sold a whopping 6.9 million copies in the United States on the first day.

The final book of the series was called “Harry Potter and the Deathly-Hallows” It claims the credit of being the largest pre-ordered book at Amazon and Barnes & Nobles and Borders.

J.K. Rowling has now lots of awards and honors to her credit. From being penniless she had now become the richest woman in the UK.
