What is a Senior Dog:

best senior dog food for dogs

It has often been said that a dog’s age is defined as being seven dog years being equal to one human year.

However, the breed and the size are also major factors in determining what is a senior dog. In general, smaller breeds will live for longer than large breeds.

As stated it can also depend on the breed because large dogs from five years of age can be termed senior, whereas small breeds do not exhibit signs of aging until 10-12 years.

Info Box

A general rule of thumb is that dogs can be considered to be seniors when they are from 5-10 years old. Small dogs are considered senior at 11 years of age. Medium-sized breeds become senior at 10 years of age, while the larger and giant breeds accomplish that milestone at 7 years. – ( Source – )

What Makes A Good Senior Dog Diet:

Your senior dog requires a diet that is well-balanced, low in calories,  and high in fiber.  In addition, it must contain the right amount of protein and fat.

Protein and Fat:

If your dog has problems with its kidney functions, then the lower the protein amount, the lower the workload. Lower fat content results in lower calories, which will help with the weight.

Info Box

Loss of muscle mass is a major problem in older dogs, therefore healthy senior dogs need more protein, not less, in order to fuel muscle. – (Source – – American Kennel Club )

Senior diets have lower calories and help to create a feeling of a full stomach with each meal taken. Again, this should help with any weight issues which appear to be a growing trend in dogs.

The higher fiber will help with the problem of constipation, which older dogs tend to be prone to.

  1. Giving the proper food and a regular checkup once per month to the Veterinarian, to a senior dog is very much important. Give him or her a regular bath and proper grooming, and showing them that you love them, and taking them for a walk in the park are somewhere that is safe for them.

And they will love you for life and protect you also, don’t forget Dog is man’s best friend!

You are so right when you say ”  Give him or her a regular bath and proper grooming, and showing them that you love them, and taking them for a walk in the park are somewhere that is safe for them. “

All they want is love and security.  As I keep saying, we are better for having them within our lives plus the health benefits  that they bring for us

  2. Our dog deserves the best food just the way we crave for nutritious food. My dog is just 4years of age and it is doing very fine. I usually prepare its meal because am kind of free for now.

This product will surely be a good recommendation for my dog when it reach age 5 because of it’s breed. By that time, I might not have all the time to prepare it meal again. This is a very useful review.

    • Glad that you found the review of use and you will have good information on the proper diet as your dog gets older.

  3. Hello there! I have not had the opportunity to own a dog before but I have always wanted one and have a lot of friends who actually do. I often visit pet stores to just check out what pets they have and I do recall passing by the dog food section and seeing the blue dolphin buffalo brand, and it seems like a popular brand.

Oh I’m also not too sure but is it 1 dog year is equal to 7 years of man? so then a 10 year old dog would be like a 70 year old man? Still, that is a big eye opener. I will be forwarding this post to a couple of friends and hope they can make the best use of this. Thanks for this informative post!

    • Hi Mike

Sincere thanks for your valued post. Glad you found the post informative. Thank you for sharing the content with your friends.

In answer to your question – ” is it 1 dog year is equal to 7 years of man “. New research has indicated that pups age much faster than older dogs.  A one-year-old dog is like a 30-year-old human. As dogs get older the aging process slows down. A dog, six years of age, would be around 60 years old.
