When you get your new dog, or pup, either through a breeder or your local rescue organization, you have now the important responsibility of taking care of this loving pet. Here are some great tips on how to keep your new dog healthy. On this site, we do recommend that you adopt and don’t shop.
When introducing your new pup or dog to your home, it might be a bit scared or very curious. Pups just want to get into everything.
One of the important things that we tell new dog owners, is to make sure that you keep over-the-counter medications or prescription drugs securely locked away. Just one of these pills could cause serious health issues.
It’s also very important to try to socialize your new pet, especially with dogs.
My own experience is that rescue dogs are some of the most loving and forgiving creatures that I have ever met. It amazes me the love that they give back, despite the conditions that they have come from. It’s important to give them time to come around to you. Also, just to repeat, lots of love and patience. Believe me, you will be well rewarded.
Important Points:
In respect of the proper amount of dog food, we recommend that you speak to your vet. Overweight dogs are becoming an increasing problem, much like dog owners themselves. Your vet should be able to work out a proper and appropriate diet for your new pet.
When you are with your vet, also schedule a check-up appointment. If appropriate, he will recommend any vaccinations or medication, if needed.
We recommend that you have your dog spayed or neutered, which helps to cut down on the pet overpopulation. If you adopt, you also cut down on the many dogs which are euthanized each year.
Annual Checkups:
Please try to ensure that you keep up the annual checkups because a vet can detect serious health issues, such as kidney and thyroid problems, plus diabetes, long before the relevant signs actually appear.
In the long run, it can save you a lot of money in vet bills. It goes without saying that it’s important to have insurance because vet bills can get expensive. This comes from one who knows.
If you are getting a female dog, and you find that she’s in heat, you need to keep a close eye on her, because you want to ensure an unwanted pregnancy. Apparently, a male dog can smell a female dog, which is in heat, up to five miles away.
You also want to check on the hair which is located on your dog’s paws. It needs to be trimmed, so as to prevent any matting, which is not good for the dog. If you are unsure, please take your pet to your local groomer.
If you are new to the area and you want to explore the various walks and parks, please ensure that you get to know any canine laws, which regulate or restrict dog owners. It’s just being respectful.
I do hope that this advice can help you get off to a good start on how to keep your new dog healthy. A dog brings many health benefits to dog owners and we are just reminding you.
